HB 1295: Reading and writing literacy

Using evidence-based instructional practices in reading and writing literacy for public elementary students.

Summary

  • Requires school districts, charter schools, and state-tribal education compact schools to meet specified requirements when updating or purchasing literacy curricula for use with students in kindergarten through grade 4.
  • Directs the Professional Educator Standards Board to adopt revised endorsement standards that include literacy-related competencies and to require teacher preparation programs to incorporate the revised standards.
  • Directs the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction to revise an educator literacy training program to enhance the literacy skills of kindergarten through grade 4 students.
