SB 5352: Free school meals

Increasing student access to free meals served at public schools.

Summary

  • Requires all school districts, charter schools, and state-tribal education compact schools, rather than certain schools, to provide breakfast and lunch at no charge to any requesting student, beginning with the 2026-27 school year.
  • Provides an additional state-funded reimbursement amount of at least $0.05 per meal to provide free meals under this provision, and adds state reimbursement provisions for public schools required to participate in the Community Eligibility Provision, which provides universal meals to schools with high numbers of low-income students.
  • Extends funding stability provisions for the Learning Assistance Program and the National Board Certified Teacher Bonus through the 2029-30 school year.
